The idea to continue to low buck it for dirt bag cred and potential future sale means I need to actively track down some functional but cheap bmx cranks. It has been a whole thing already, so I'm sick of it. Imagine that?<br></p><p>In other important news around the Shred Shed, I traded <a href="https://paintxdestroy.blogspot.com/2020/11/trouble-bike.html">Ol' Trouble</a> to my nephew for his 1st gen Surly 1x1. This leaves me needing some sort of tricked out silly bike. I was getting worried about consuming dooks (and the resulting permanent injuries to my aging body), so it was probably the best to go a little less hard. I guess they built a little dirt jump track in the town little dude lives in, and so he's been riding that a lot. I'd be stoked if I was 14 years old and that was my bike, and he definitely bounces better than I do these days!</p><p>I'm not gonna go into a whole rant or history of observed trials, street trials, or whatever. I dig the strategic and technical challenges of trials riding, and back
to the getting old thing, I'm not planning on hammering 10 foot acid
drops or nothin'. <a href="https://youtu.be/slxaOyDdId4">Here is a video.</a> They make street trials bikes these days as well, which look similar to a bmx bike with front and rear brakes. The whole sport and style is very uhh... European, if you know what I'm saying. I hope you do, cause I don't. But really, it is a more British and Euro-centric style of riding, so a lot of these parts I had to order from overseas. <a href="https://www.tartybikes.co.uk/">Tarty Bikes</a> is where it's at, they have tons of cool shit and I generally get stuff next day. It's crazy how fast I get parts from England. Whoever packed my last order also clearly saw all my green parts and tossed in some matching Jitsie stickers. Big thanks, it's the little stuff!<br></p><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8ULzDW_MIkqv_mEx7f6lwGR2YvFp3y_uezQ4jqj0HY3pcXuQp6i0aMimhpwXl3SNUAyqJA8JnRlPRnP17X59gowKN8ZQJqYmrQQ3IaZNDj0mgcinAtOHbWfGpHu_9u-bbliQJ1wzabRSN/s2048/20210204_135801-1.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1360" data-original-width="2048" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8ULzDW_MIkqv_mEx7f6lwGR2YvFp3y_uezQ4jqj0HY3pcXuQp6i0aMimhpwXl3SNUAyqJA8JnRlPRnP17X59gowKN8ZQJqYmrQQ3IaZNDj0mgcinAtOHbWfGpHu_9u-bbliQJ1wzabRSN/s320/20210204_135801-1.jpg" width="320"></a></div><p>This frame has been kicking around in my world for around 5 years at this point. I had it complete once before, but immediately mashed together the drivetrain and busted everything on the first ride. The frame is an Onza Limey 3 Team model. Currently the only steed in my collection not made of Crom's finest - steel is real, bitches. Still, it is a beautiful piece of hydroformed aluminum (or aluminium considering this shit is from Jolly Old England - pip pip cheerio). It uses traditional track style dropouts and is spaced at 135mm, and both of those were major considerations when I picked this frame. The geometry is fairly mild by today's standards as well. Aside from obviously not sitting, these bikes are super weird and uncomfortable to ride if you aren't used to it.</p><p>But get ready for the reoccurring topic of busted shit and thrashing out expensive parts. I say
that because in one way it's like "yeah buddy, I did that," but in
another way, that was probably at least a hunnert bones straight into
the scrap bin. Someone once said not to buy dedicated trials parts, the
ol' maxim "cheap, light, strong - pick two" doesn't apply. I can attest
to that.</p><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFU60DobdRqSufyvsWXR05KBNrL_D0yHNWHUdExYhr8jetNKaeeH8Kwetc2mzmfL0PL9LZDE5cmqXD4HNKiSayMYPtyuv0y9oJTftEQDAV_oFFQctT0_SYbRDBVpgKSb-psI8EMdi-FBi9/s2048/20210204_135830.jpg"><img border="0" data-original-height="1152" data-original-width="2048" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFU60DobdRqSufyvsWXR05KBNrL_D0yHNWHUdExYhr8jetNKaeeH8Kwetc2mzmfL0PL9LZDE5cmqXD4HNKiSayMYPtyuv0y9oJTftEQDAV_oFFQctT0_SYbRDBVpgKSb-psI8EMdi-FBi9/s320/20210204_135830.jpg" width="320"></a></div><br><p></p><p></p><p></p><p>I'd like to think I've made great strides in bicycle mechanic-ing since I last threw this thing together, and here is to hoping this build will take the abuse.<br></p><p>Remember how I said I mashed a bunch of parts up immediately upon my first ride? I had to replace everything from the trials specific drivetrain aside from the bottom bracket*. Trials shit did not impress me, I even used the caged pedals on another build (I really like old school beartraps), and I split the axle on one. I would destroy those RF mighty quick, and they are in great condition. They need to go on a sick steel singlespeed. Hint. Those Spank pedals are rockin', and I've found that overly machined platform pedals get wrecked quick with technical riding.<br></p><p>* I guess the bash is pretty trials specific as well. Super strange technical trials things: The BB shell is 68mm. The spindle length is 128mm. ISIS splined. If the spindle length was skinnier the 22t granny chainring would interfere with the frame. I have wanted to do a proper coaster brake klunker build for a while now, and a buddy of mine had an old Schwinn Cruiser he didnt need after he found a really nice early 80s Ross. I've also been working on some wheels, and I want to move into some proper hot rodding and start doing frame modifications. It's all too perfect, so away we go.

Here is our humble steed in the beginning, triumphantly perched on top of a parts pile. Draped across the front of my extra Radmobile like a busted Daytona stripper at the 93 Mopar Nats. She looks a little rough there, but diving in she's suprisingly clean. No rust in her guts, and check out the final picture of that hub below. I assume its a late 90s model. I'm not really sure, and I don't really care. Praise Crom she's mild steel.

Those Schwinn cruiser tires are cool, and only slightly dry rotted. Steel rim and mild steel spokes. 100% junk. I'll fix that with questionable parts choices and shoddy wrenching!
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilfrcDdJt_dZbMwKrWn3oJlOFh0vPJnYEuqmqny2J1v-d7G4sWfLUWRydGdXSP-5tIMUDBD_fU2kN8ZSccVJ0pQrwO7MhBUzY4o8teJ9QKeNlKdE5ji9ShzWJeqDRBVqXPfGiuCG9YRCxD/s2048/20201211_224318-1.jpg" style="display: block; padding: 1em 0; text-align: center; "><img alt="" border="0" height="320" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1587" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilfrcDdJt_dZbMwKrWn3oJlOFh0vPJnYEuqmqny2J1v-d7G4sWfLUWRydGdXSP-5tIMUDBD_fU2kN8ZSccVJ0pQrwO7MhBUzY4o8teJ9QKeNlKdE5ji9ShzWJeqDRBVqXPfGiuCG9YRCxD/s320/20201211_224318-1.jpg"/></a></div>
Pictured with the krusty hub is the rim I will use, and at the time of this post it is all broken down and polished. I calculated spoke length, and lo, it was a Sign. The fanciest spokes made. Four-hundred and twenty of those suckers. For about 60 bux shipped to me. Meant to be. These spokes are, for sure, a little (a lot) daintier than I prefer, and so fresh brass nips are on their way as well. I have a set of mint Araya 26 x 1.50 rims, but I may save those for a fresher build.

Here is a clean and shiny hub. A little elbow grease and she polished right up. Probably gonna break it down and run everything through the parts washer in my Pop's shop. I have some cool custom stuff coming, so stay tuned.

The rear wheel is definitely the weak link with this build, so I'm not suprised at this point. </p><p>Healing a pulled muscle, along with a holiday vacation, and a weird world = turning wrenches and miniature painting. Replaced the spoke on the rear wheel, and trued both of them up. My current obsession with moto bars and bmx grips continues to make its way onto all my builds.</p><p>I've always wanted to do a red, purple, and white build, so parts from like 4 spare bikes that have kicked around for years have come together in a cosmic clusterfuck of go hard. I think she shall be known as the Royale from here out. Consequently I would like to build a new rear wheel with a purple Hope Trials hub, but stuff. Things. Is it worth it? Thats a lot of bread.<br /></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZl30RlbI0chB9RXJwWHmWbI9hOhUSJaVJkSLDSDqhaNQnSeqQP46S_geX7dm8JmZtDY1ZaTKkfma-AUr1rMRBK9QIKwZGyiiq8KQ_Y-bATAgiay4rE2hkECw_5fCjw_VHxkRXOCqFrtbH/s2021/20201128_140317-1.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1365" data-original-width="2021" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZl30RlbI0chB9RXJwWHmWbI9hOhUSJaVJkSLDSDqhaNQnSeqQP46S_geX7dm8JmZtDY1ZaTKkfma-AUr1rMRBK9QIKwZGyiiq8KQ_Y-bATAgiay4rE2hkECw_5fCjw_VHxkRXOCqFrtbH/s320/20201128_140317-1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>Maxxis DTH skinwalls. 26x2.2 or something. I was kinda bummed about this, and I do actually regret not getting a pretty pretty princess pepto pink 3rd gen frame. Regardless, I've had the same orange 1x1 for a lot of years, and it's such a terrific bike.<div>

I bought this toward the end of the first production year, because I didn't expect it would make it to a second. I normally would have preferred to start from a frame only, but the wheels are Boost 26+. Super common, right? If you are not a bike person, they are not common. I figured it would be worth it to just buy a complete bike for those wheels alone, and then have extra parts. </div>

I was not impressed with the stock build, and I think Surly remedied that with later releases. Suprisingly I won't bitch about it now, but I think the wheels and headset are the only pieces left stock. I'm cool with the dropper routing, but really, Surly? A deraileur hangar? They aren't great stories, which is often the case with the bad crashes. I'm usually festive and jovial about the harsh reality of embracing sweet lady dirt, but these really hurt. I actually took a day off work for the second one. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
First time I dedicated too late and biffed the landing on a tabletop. I think if I hadn't hesitated I would have been fine. The other one I was just making my second run of the day on a short little section I've ridden at least a hundred times and just went too hard too fast. Brutal. But crashing is cool, and I hear chicks dig scars. </div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So a quick breakdown on parts and setup:</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Cockpit: </div>
<div>
Deity bars and stem. Cut down about 20mm on each side. High rise, and there is not a lot of stack. It feels perfect after I cut the bars. I tore up my pinkie knuckles more than once with those wide bars. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Demolition grips in purple swirl. I didn't really ride these til today, and til now I thought the circular pattern may be annoying. Wrong. Way comfy, sick colors, and circa 2003 Hatebreed graphics. Into it. Bmx grips win. Like rawdoggin' your bars without those clamps getting in the way of the feel. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Paul levers. Smooth. Pretty. My first purple part of the build. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Drivetrain:</div>
<div>
Raceface Atlas cranks. I guess these have a aluminum spindle. I put my trust in steel. 30mm bottom bracket. At least it is threaded.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Blackspire 32t ring. Narrow wide. Thumbs down for singlespeeding, but it's a search to find proper rings these days. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
20t steel Surly cog. Crom. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Those Deity pedals look snazzy but I'll destroy the hell out of them by October. Kmc chain. I don't know why there are other brands. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Brakes, dropper, whatever:</div>
<div>
Spoon saddle. Poor 66sick seat. It lived such a short life. Fortunately I got it on closeout. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Fox Transfer dropper in Kashima coat. Raises pinkie high. I may be a dirtbag, but my girls get the best. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Brakes are mechanical. TRP Spyke with Hope rotors. More bling. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Maxxis tires. DHR and DHF 26+. The good stuff with light casing, tear protection, 3 tire compounds. Whatever else Maxxis made up to sound more better. The wheels are no name hubs with Alex rims. I'll build a fancy set someday, but that is expensive. </div>
<div>

Well, I was sold right there. I love that Pacific Northwest style. Steeped in crusty buds and sludgy suds.<br />
<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
Anyways, check out the label, it's run by a dude from Denver who worked at the record shop Wax Trax and fronted a little band called <a href="https://youtu.be/rVSClZB_aFs" target="_blank">Speedwolf</a>. They are most excellent, and you should listen to them. He has good taste and releases some cool shit.</blockquote>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Man, those crusties sure know how to put together a complete album. I didn't listen to this before I bought it, but look at that packaging. Even if I found a couple good tunes but wasn't blown away, I would still say it was worth it. Fortunately that is not the case, and I am pretty stoked on this album. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I partially attribute the awesome and extravagant packaging to them being artsy fartsy Portlanders (nothing wrong with that), but you can also obviously see (and hear) their love for classic crust albums and art. I really get less stenchcore from Genogeist, which I consider to be Stormcrow/Dystopia type Oakland Bay Area stuff, and more along the lines of Nausea/ Doom apocalypse punk. There is definitely a solid slab of fellow PDxers Hellshock mixed in. I wouldn't be suprised if there was some crossover between the bands, but I don't really give a shit to look it up.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
A standout tune is Dataslave, which features a sick Extortion style speedcore riff that pops up throughout the song and blows my mind every time.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is definitely the kind of music that puts me in the mood to work on some Necromu da or post-apocalyptic style minis. I just find the music so evocative of a dystopian cyber punk existence. It's funny, because in my limited research, thats how they describe the album. My first listen I didn't get it, but after I've made it through a few times, Fuckin' a. They nailed it. I imagine hanging out listening to it in my Necromunda gang clubhouse while cleaning my stubber, or going to see it in some Blade Runner-esque rock and roll club. Definitely got some ideas brewing for a Rogue Trader style piece I've been thinking about for a while. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I highly recommend picking up a copy of this album while it is still available, or giving it a search and listening to it. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
If you can't get it at Splattered, it is released by <a href="https://blackwaterpdx.com/store/" target="_blank">Black Water Records</a>. Looking into it, I definitely need to put in an order there sometime, but that's a slippery slope!</div>

It is good justification to paint or work on something new afterward. Also, I crashed hard and I forsee at least another week of no-go-hard. What do they say? Ride like lightning. Crash like thunder. Well, I did it again, man, and it makes me feel like I'm getting old.<br />
<br />
This time back on the bench is a pretty rare Leman Russ mini. I picked up duder years ago, NOS in package with his wolves and backpack. Way stoked to dig into a piece of mint classic lead to make it unique. The axe is a conversion from an old reaper weapons pack, with a plastic wolf tail stuck on. Cork rocks, and a piece of plaster carved to look like a rune stone.<br />

Klegg Dagrok is a typical wasteland dirtbag, spending most of his time burning gas, cruising the slums, and racing in the semi-pro last man standing thrash rash enduros. Pro racers are the post-apocalyptic equivalent of star athletes, and they often travel long distances to perform and race in larger settlements. Lesser known riders often take jobs as escorts for caravans, messengers, or sometimes even traders/traveling mechanics to support their dream of hitting the big time. Klegg is out on a pleasure ride, and his bike is stripped down without any extra gear, saddlebags, or fuel. He has his pistol with him for protection, but in a race he would be armed with his favorite hand to hand weapon.</div>

I got the idea for his pose from a book called "Street Bike Extreme," where dudes wearing Jncos do stoppies on rice rockets and point at the camera a lot. It was a good find for like $2 on the junk table at an auto parts swap meet. Minor conversions include a head swap from a Nercromunda Orlock, arm swap from a Mantic Deadzone Enforcer, a sculpted shoulder pad, skull, and belt. <br /><br />My ol' girl, a blue Trek 800 that I got new in 1997, is going through a complete rebuild right now. It was pulling teeth to get my parents to buy me a brand new "real" bike, rather than something from Toys R Us or Walmart. For sure they never expected over 20 years later I would still be riding it. She has been my daily driver, beer bike, errand runner, cruiser, and all around hot roddin' steed since well, I guess my early teenage years. I did my first substantial rebuild of her when I moved back from Colorado in 2012. There's at least 5,000 miles on her since then, but years of use and abuse, even with regular care and maintenance, destroys even the best parts.<br /><br />A bike like this is like building a really sweet Pinto. Or painting really rad 80's-era miniatures. In my opinion, It's poishing a turd all the way around to the point of being pretty fucking cool. But then again, I like Pintos, and own a substantial stash of classic lead. But back to her style... I'd meet a lady out for a date on this, which is probably part of the reason I don't have a lady. When she told me "We're at different places in our lives," it would be wheelies, jumps, and shenanigans all the way home. I still have the receipt and owners manual, and it was supposed to be matte dark blue. I remember being really into the matte finishes Trek used in the 90's, and was bummed about the delivered color being different. At this point I'm so stoked, cause that shit would be dated as hell, and the glossy royal blue with red and yellow decals is sexy. Seriously, I'd paint aforementioned mythical Pinto, or an early '80s Fox-stang based off the colors on this bike, but that is for sure a rant for a completely seperate post.<br /><br /><br />A quick breakdown of the build where she sits:<br /><br />

<br />Surly Sunrise bars with Cult/Vans gum grips. Grips were previously different sets of ODI/Vans, but at this point in my life I feel you lose some connection with locking grips, and I'm moving away from them. Paul Love Levers with matching Motolite brakes, and at some point years ago there was a different set of Paul levers.<br /><br /><br />

<br /><br />Reissue 1" quill S&M Redneck stem in what else? Red. 1" quill BMX stems are always a part I cruise ebay, craiglist, and yard sale bikes for in case something interesting comes up. I borrowed a bike from a buddy years ago with a Redneck stem on it, and I remember him making a big deal about it. I had been debating if a red stem would work, and finding out S&M reissued them exactly when I was shopping for a high quality piece sold me. I was considering a Bassett BMX bottom load stem as well, which is a beautiful piece.<br />

<br /><br />I'm impressed so far with the new set of Promax square taper cranks, but eventually I'd like to find some nice vintage polished crank arms. New Shimano bottom bracket. Surly 36t chainring. KMC chain, cause they are the only chains for BMX and singlespeeding.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br /><br /><br />Vintage Crupi Pro bear trap pedals. Other than some sweet stems, Bassett BMX also makes replacement cages for these and Hutch Pro pedals, and some beautiful looking classic BMX pedals of their own design.<br />

<br />Paul hubs with Sun Rhynolite XL rims. My buddy taught me how to lace wheels with these, so one of these is the first wheel I built. Maxxis skinwall DTH (Drop the Hammer) dirt jump tires. Freewheel is 16 tooth and probably an ACS crossfire.<br /><br /><br />

Kalloy Uno seatpost with WTB Volt saddle. A Chromag Trailmaster LTD leather saddle is on order. Maybe I'll work on tracking down an anodized red seatpost in the future.<br /><br />Below are also the pictures I dug out of excellent rides and good times in the past! <br /><br />The Sugino cranks were wore out years ago, and one picture features a beautiful set of Caramba cranks that are now toast. I'm bummed on that one. Also, daaaang... looking back, she looked really good with those old school Ritchey tires and SDG saddle! <br />

Pretty stoked on this new arrangement, it's in the same room as my workout equipment, so I'm forced to stare at my shamefully unfinished work regularly. I've been continuing on my efforts of blasting through unstarted or unfinished pieces from the past decade. Man, thats weird to say.<br />

<br /><br />Here's a Rackham Mid-Nor King, with a converted crab claw arm I sculpted. I'm pretty much down to building a base for him now. I've been kicking around some ideas of evil puppets/miniature castles/cosmic horror type stuff inspired by some of the other miniatures in the line. There will be a tile floor being torn up by the tentacles on the top, and below I started on the puppet battlements.<br />

<br />This is a Privateer Press Dire Troll Mauler. I thought this was going to be a limited release when it came out, so I picked one up immediately. It's an expensive and hefty piece of pewter, requires a bunch of pins and putty work to assemble, and is totally worth it. There are a lot of hours in here so far, and I'm trying to keep my head up and stay motivated. Basing is still undecided.<br />

mountain biking for a while, but I just never really dedicated to
buying or setting up a bike specifically for the purpose. In my own
unimitable way, rather than buying a bike that is made to do what I
want to do, I decided to convert my trusty Surly 1x1 to a trails and
trials ready shredder. We shall see how this truly works out. I'm
never going to be able to tear it up like dudes who have been riding
trials for years, and that is not my goal. I'm stoked to work on my
performance and handling skills. You know... flow better, ride
faster, impress babes. Also, I can go to the indoor skatepark and
still ride when the weather sucks.<br />
<br />
<div align="LEFT">
I snagged the Complete Guide to
Trial Riding by Julien Happich, the webmaster of <a href="http://www.trashzen.com/" target="_blank">TrashZen</a>, which is a
site with massive amounts of riding tutorials. His book and website
are both most highly recommended. If you wanna check out some wicked
trials riders, check out Hans Rey, Kenny Belaey, Martyn Ashton, and
Ryan Leech. Really, you should just put Sabotage on repeat and watch
the first 10 minutes of <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OXEg4vy8CE0" target="_blank">this</a>. </div>

Ahh... the venerable Surly 1x1.
What can she not do? Use a derailleur! Ha! I was lucky enough to come
across a pristine 2008 model, in my size (rare), on the 'Bay a couple
years ago. I have a hunch it must have been used by a roadie to build
a cyclocross bike. Silly roadies. It had Eddy Merckx stickers on it,
and the lawyer tabs on the fork were ground off. Major fail, dude. I
am not super keen on my axle coming loose and losing my front wheel
while shredding down a rocky hill at 20 mph. Also, Surly, you got rid
of the canti mounts on the 1x1? I'd proably have bought a new Pepto
Pink frame by now.</div>

<div align="LEFT">
So if you fancy doing things my
way, you're gonna want to start with your main trail bike. Hope you
run v-brakes and a 26er! If not, well, your technology is dumb. My
vast amounts of scientific research show that a rear disc on a 26"
trials wheel makes stuff break. Being a big dude who breaks stuff, I
feel that is a way important detail to know. I hope you didn't invest
in this 29" wheel, disc brakes, carbon fiber, and lighter is
bester fad. It's all a conspiracy! Rim brake steel 26'ers will rise
again!</div>

Buy yourself a granny gear and
new tensioners for both sides of your wheel. Thats a extended length
bolt for a Paul rear hub. Stronger and safer when running a chain
tensioner. Crucial. I have one for both sides. These are Trialtech

Hey, look, I used my brain. That
is a wrench from an old Paasche airbrush. The larger end will adjust
that there tensioner when you are 5 miles from the trailhead and you
just had to patch that rear tube cause you forgot to toss a spare in
the saddlebag. Hopefully you remembered the saddlebag with the
wrenches in it. And some way to inflate a tube.<br />

<h2 align="LEFT">
Words on Dinglespeeding</h2>
<div align="LEFT">
</div>
<div align="LEFT">
</div>
<div align="LEFT">
You're gonna want to work on your
drivetrain a bit. Slap that granny gear on your crankset. I had to
buy a new one cause I throw that shit out every time I pull one off a
bike. It's an issue I have. I know of at least a couple sets of
useful and nice deraillereurs that got thrown in the trash cause,
well, gears suck. I picked up a 22 tooth ring, and when my new wheel
is built, I'll be using an 18 tooth cog.</div>
<div align="LEFT">
</div>
<div align="LEFT">
The plan is essentially to build
a dingle-speed (that's a single speed with 2 cogs and rings that I
can manually switch the chain between) that can be run at either
32-20 or 22-18. Unfortunately, in my application, this will require a
second chain. It's going to be a bit of a pain in the ass to switch
back and forth, but I'll deal.</div>
<div align="LEFT">
</div>
<div align="LEFT">
Usually a dingle speed will use
two gear combos that have the same number of teeth. This allows you
to swap your chain back and forth between gear ratios without
affecting the alignment or placement of the wheel. Take my Trek, for
example, it is set up as 36-16, so if I wanted to run a 32-20, both
combinations have 52 teeth, and the wheel will seat at exactly the
same spot, with the same chain. I could ride the 10 miles to the
trails, then swap my chain to a ratio that was possible to ride said
trails.</div>
<div align="LEFT">
</div>
<h2 align="LEFT">
Fork Stuff</h2>
<div align="LEFT">
</div>
<div align="LEFT">
I did upgrade to a
trials-specific disc-brake front-fork. It is a bit lighter, and much
stiffer than my stock Surly fork. Goodbye front V-brakes. Man, what
was I just ranting about not too long ago? Poser, huh? There is,
unfortunately, much less tire clearance on the new fork, but I'll
deal. The stock fork did have a ton of flex, and it was difficult to
pop endos reliably. The new fork also has slightly less rake, so it
brings the wheel in closer to the frame. It will be more nimble, at
the expense of getting a little more twitchy when bombing down hills.
All around, it should fix a lot of handling issues I had with the
stock fork. It's also blacker than my soul and looks snazzy. Bonus!</div>

I threw that guy in the clamp of

<h3 align="LEFT">
Hints for sawing up forks (or
anything else) with a hacksaw:</h3>
<div align="LEFT">
</div>
<div align="LEFT">
</div>
<div align="LEFT">
1. Measure many many times before
cutting. A set of calipers would be rad, but I use a nice metric
ruler from a dissection set. Seriously, if you paint miniatures,
build models, or dick with bikes, purchase a dissection set. So many
useful tools. When cutting a fork, measure your stem stack height,
head tube length, and bottom bracket height. Learn it. If you are
building a model, measure many times. Make a mark. Measure again.</div>
<br />
<div align="LEFT">
2. Clamp down your part and mark
around the top edge of it with a thicker Sharpie. You should probably
use black. As you can see, all I found was a red. Subtract a couple
(thats like, 2) milimeters from the line. Yes, you could do this
outright and skip my last instruction, but just don't. Knowing how
your parts fit and work together goes a long way into proper
construction, function, and reliability. It saves a lot of
frustration when you know what is wrong with your bike, and know how
to fix it.</div>
<div align="LEFT">
</div>
<div align="LEFT">
3. Use a razor saw, or diamond
needle file to make a guide mark. The hacksaw is going to slide
everywhere if there is not a solid groove for it to sit. It's kinda
like pinning a miniature.</div>
<div align="LEFT">
</div>
<div align="LEFT">
4. Oil that saw! Put a drop of
chain lube on the part being cut when the groove in 5 or so mm deep.</div>

I frequently disappear from this blog
for long periods of time. I also mention bikes from time to time, and
that's probably a large reason of why I'm incommunicado. I started
this post on the auspicious 1-year anniversiary of breaking myself
while mountain biking. I figured I'd break it down (Heh!) and give
you heaping crapload of stuff about bikes, most of which you probably
don't care about. Now that it is a few weeks later, I finally
finished it. Cool? Party! Hang in there. There are Legos later!</div>

The Trek 800 (left) is my
townie/commuter/bar bike thrasher. I got her brand new in '97 or so.
It isn't a rare or valuable frame, but it means a lot to me. It was
like pulling teeth to get my parents to buy me a brand new Trek as a
teenager. I've rebuilt almost everything. 36X16 gearing. Ritchey
front wheel and tires. Gusset Open Prison dirt jump bars. Old-school
BMX stem. Paul brake levers. Sugino mountain cranks, Primo pedals,
and SDG saddle. She's built like a tank, and gets ridden at least
1500 miles a year. Some cool parts will be heading her way soon.</div>

The Shredbeast Annihilator is a 2008
Surly 1x1 frame. I was stoked to find an older Surly frame on eBay,
not only in my size, but in practically mint condition. For some
reason there were Eddy Merckx stickers on it when it arrived. It is a
mystery. I'll assume you have no idea what that means, but its pretty
much like putting Ferrari stickers on a Jeep. My only complaint is it
is arrrrnge, and not weed green or pepto pink. I built her from the
ground up to be Jake-proof. If only I could bike proof the Jake.
Geared 32x20 for Pennsyltuckey hills. Sun Rhyno Lite XL rims laced to
Paul hubs. I laced the rear wheel myself. Matching Raceface cranks,
chainring. 66Sick saddle. Carbon TRP brake levers. My trail ripper
and Sunday driver. I'd like to post a full build log at some point,
but we shall see.<br />

Now that crap is out of the way, I
occassionally play with Legos. Imagine that. A grown ass man who
writes a blog about playing with toy robots and little space men also
plays with plastic interlocking bricks. Since shreds are a no-go on
the East Coast at this time of year, I discovered I happen to have a
perfect Lego me and a bicycle. Of course, being an obsessive
tinkerer, I couldn't leave well enough alone, and out came my
favorite sleeveless Napalm Death shirt, clippers, razor saw, files,
and paints.</div>

This is where it began. I posted the
first picture on the book of faces, and aside from the fact it does
very much resemble me, I recieved complaints he was not doing my

the bike, most non-heinous. We're gonna have to do something about
that.</div>

First you need a torso. Sand that shit
down. I used Testor's sanding films. They are awesome, I've been
using them for years. Then paint on it. This is not a very good
tutorial, I know. I probably should have primed before I painted, but
I was in a drunken fit of motivation. I also carved down the front
rim of the helmet with needle files, as it obscured his (my?)
eyebrows. I lightly sanded his right arm as well, as I painted on
some tattoos. I will prime and paint the helmet at some point, it
will be black with a Despise You sticker on the side.

Here is the bike completed. I used a

looks a lot cleaner and ready to rip. The downfall is that I removed
the kickstand, so it falls over constantly now. I drilled a tiny hole
in bottom of the frame so I can use .020" brass wire to hold the
bike while totally shredding some gnarly tricks. I will probably
paint the bike as well, probably lime green. Maybe purple.</div>

Other than that, I've been working on this dude. He kinda reminds me of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GG_Allin" target="_blank">GG Allin</a>. I feel that if any mythical races were going to strip naked, play with their little ding-dongs, and cover themselves with feces, it would probably be the orks. I took pictures of the stages I used to paint his helm, but they didn't really come out too well. Sorry, dudes. No tutorials for you today. </div>

Figured I would just get these completed pictures posted up. See, I've been doing shit! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
This miniature was incredibly fun to
paint. I was going to recommend tracking one down on ebay, but they
are all retarded expensive. Dunno how much I paid for this guy, but it wasn't 40 bucks. I decided to try out a cracked magma
effect on his chestpiece, and though it may look like his armor is
encrusted with candy corn, I'm still pretty stoked on the finished
product. It was cool to have a little space to throw in some freehand
on the plasma gun's power cell. The eagle on his chest- and the caps
on his horns- were painted with a mix of metallics I've been working
with for a bit.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
I imagined the beastman was from an Imperial Guard battalion lost in the Eye of Terror. Chaos has begun to take hold and warp them, yet through denial they still attempt to cling to humanity. The color scheme was inspired by the wildly colorful and chaotic artwork and painting styles of early Rogue Trader 40k. Kinda bummed, I feel the marine on the base would have made a better narrative painted in the pre-Heresy Thousand Sons colors. I'm sure as hell not motivated enough to go back and repaint it.</div>

Well, I guess with the passing of Labor Day
here in the USA, it's unofficially considered the end of
summer. I'm cool with that, I dig the fall. I'm definitely ready to
settle down and get back to doing more work, and mountain biking and hiking
in the fall can't be beat.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
I did start shipping out the packages for
my mini exchange, and it only took my slacker ass two months. So
rejoice! If you joined up, your grimy little fists should be all over
some sweet vintage lead soon.</div>
<br />
I figured I'd post up a little WIP
action to let you see what I've been working on lately. I've been
making a little bit of progress on the beastman. I'm trying to avoid
getting super involved in this miniature and continue moving along quickly
without getting held up on one spot too long. I have the habit of
starting miniatures for fun, and then I get super involved in the
details. Pretty soon I'm 20 hours in, then boredom arrives, and then
there is another half finished miniature in my case. I'm going to try
to not let that happen. Insert line from everyone's favorite space
muppet.<br />

<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Alright, in this post I have some stuff
regarding the Rogue Trader Mini Exchange I proposed months ago, and I wrote you
up a little tutorial. It's nothing too advanced, but it shows my
method to take care of "slotta-style" tabs on your
miniatures, so you can pin them to a custom base. Hopefully it will
come in handy for some of you.</div>
<br />
To the cats who dedicated to the mini
exchange, they are all ready to be shipped out, and as always, I
apologize for my slacker ass. You're getting free miniatures. You
really can't complain too much.<br />
<br />
So I ended up picking out an ork, a 40k beastman, and a rare Leman Russ mini. Here are two of 'em all prepped, pinned, and on their completed
bases. At this point in the space-time continuum they are primed as
well. I converted the Russ mini a bit by pinning on an axe from a
Reaper weapons pack, and the wolf tail is from the old Space Wolves
sprue. Blasphemy! Sacrilege! You may declare that converting a rare
and classic Leman Russ is complete and utter bullshit, but I don't
care. I think he was supposed to be holding reins for his pet wolves
in his right hand, but I always thought the pose was a bit awkward.<br />
<br />
I've always dug this beastman
miniature, and I haven't seen any well painted versions of him. I
think it is interesting he is wearing loyalist armour and wielding a
plasma pistol. Pretty cool. I believe in the olden days of Rogue
Trader the beastmen were considered a sub-race of humanity, rather
than the spawn of chaos. I'm probably still going to paint him up as
a chaos follower, 'cause I feel it's only proper. I'm thinking
Khorne.<br />
<br />

covered in blue, purple, and magenta metalflake, it's from a board I
airbrushed up years ago.</div>
</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Here are my completed bases for duders.
I'm going to try to write up a tutorial on the creation of the slab
bases at some point. They involve casting thin sheets of plaster,
then breaking them up and carving them. The graffiti base has been
completed and kicking around in the stash for years, and I think the
ork will finally make an appropriate addition to it. The round wooden
base in the middle is from a liquor bottle stopper, and the square
one on the right is from a children's wooden block set. The rocks
were all made from wine cork, and there are a few miscellaneous odds
and ends thrown in from the scrap boxes.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjo46I8IyfVEwtFCxY0xSkDWbmoMhnV_iorLiNCSvDDqYlxUW8I1we3AmGd92esi0B76WgrggXyW7qb9NPXYwmsO-2r8a7LK0BOvokZRUkfFoIK48CyZJsIX_td90XHFbdbspUHrvW0H__-/s1600/rtbases.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjo46I8IyfVEwtFCxY0xSkDWbmoMhnV_iorLiNCSvDDqYlxUW8I1we3AmGd92esi0B76WgrggXyW7qb9NPXYwmsO-2r8a7LK0BOvokZRUkfFoIK48CyZJsIX_td90XHFbdbspUHrvW0H__-/s1600/rtbases.JPG" height="153" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Here is the detail of the base for
Russ. As you can see, it's made of a carved slab of plaster, stacks
of cork, and a wolf skull from Logan Grimnar. There is some putty on
the inside to solidify everything and to allow the pins on the
miniature's feet to grab on to something. Note the two holes drilled
for the pins.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAR0Oa4bm24-Ih2he_3LZ8pFzlLNNK75sd-VWS4MxPIo-08EG5DsPLL0QhEqhr8KiapJyLazOlMKjhuoRaeDHpM-gPFzgcToMa3SEFD6jzLJ3IjLyd_0v0ieej8N0EznvzNj0mnrGAGAbH/s1600/russbase.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAR0Oa4bm24-Ih2he_3LZ8pFzlLNNK75sd-VWS4MxPIo-08EG5DsPLL0QhEqhr8KiapJyLazOlMKjhuoRaeDHpM-gPFzgcToMa3SEFD6jzLJ3IjLyd_0v0ieej8N0EznvzNj0mnrGAGAbH/s1600/russbase.JPG" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Anyways, on to the useful bits.</div>
<br />
I'm sure many of you have your own
style or technique for removing the tabs from miniatures, but I
figured I'd let you in on my method. It's all well and good to glue
your minis directly into a slotta-base (personally, I prefer the
Privateer Press style) and putty around the gaps, but nothing really
sets off a mini like an impressive scenic base. Unfortunately, to get
that mini on that base you're gonna have to cut that annoying tab off
and put some pins through the feet.<br />
<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvLeqToTV1q0MiiqwkfgbYtPhC_PCUJNYwj3-ncoQ_l9XcQH6cRoZLbaFWvISqPdtQEzCgDfXPMvywtwwbtDZrMNE0_KDuQyoL65tz7Tst2-7ZtYnimvYXF2GgKYcgzNkdEVKQ1yX5zbmW/s1600/pinning01.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvLeqToTV1q0MiiqwkfgbYtPhC_PCUJNYwj3-ncoQ_l9XcQH6cRoZLbaFWvISqPdtQEzCgDfXPMvywtwwbtDZrMNE0_KDuQyoL65tz7Tst2-7ZtYnimvYXF2GgKYcgzNkdEVKQ1yX5zbmW/s1600/pinning01.JPG" height="180" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Cue "Tools of the Trade" by
Carcass. Also, check the ork.</div>
</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
So you can always just saw directly
across the tab, however find that to be a massive pain
in the ass, and kinda messy. It generates lots of gnarly lead dust in
the air, I find it isn't very accurate, and it requires more cleanup
and filing than this method.</div>
<br />
First step is to saw vertically through
the middle of the tab. Careful, don't emasculate the man. The reason
I do this is so after the tab hab been sawed, you can carefully grab
under the foot with pliers and bend the two sides of the tab in
opposite directions with your clippers. I know this seems
unneccesary, but the narrow space caused by the saw doesn't leave
enough room to properly clip the tab off without distortion, and if
you go all in and just try to clip the tab down the center it is
going to bend, or possibly break, the lower extremities of your
miniature. This beastman had particularly fragile legs, but marines
are usually a little more durable.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTvjMY9aw3WciL7Ot1wzMtOlV9ehAVBsWixplpmk6LABU60p8mEw9GqDz-bostXDPQLMMPZgI4ux9qEqc25mGFiDl-r8IGrJVoBgkopDfDu_yXIix129h13husaxh239Uc8SP0dVbFr9aY/s1600/pinning02.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTvjMY9aw3WciL7Ot1wzMtOlV9ehAVBsWixplpmk6LABU60p8mEw9GqDz-bostXDPQLMMPZgI4ux9qEqc25mGFiDl-r8IGrJVoBgkopDfDu_yXIix129h13husaxh239Uc8SP0dVbFr9aY/s1600/pinning02.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Now you can simply trim the tab off
until it looks something like the picture on the right.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />

<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
My pin vice came with a needle sharp
punch, which I find excellent for marking where your pin is going to
go. You can also use a sewing pin or needle. I discourage the use of
the tip of your hobby blade for this, it's easy to slip and injure
yourself. It is also possible for the tip of the blade to snap off in
the foot, and the tiniest little fragment of hardened steel is going
to completely botch your attempt to drill that hole. That being said,
it is important to make an indent where you want to drill, 'cause
otherwise the bit wont have a proper seat, and it can walk all over
the place. Frustrating.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Then drill. Carefully. I used the
smallest drill bit and thinnest brass wire I have to pin this mini. Sorry I failed on taking pictures of the wire and finishing steps. Hopefully you should be able to manage from here.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
If the mini I am pinning has large enough feet/legs, I'll use a thicker piece of wire for one foot, and a very thin piece for the other. Observe the ork in the first picture of this tutorial. His left foot has a thicker wire than the right foot. This allows you to drill two large holes, and the large wire will anchor the miniature while the thinner one allows easier placement.<br />
<br />
Alright guys, take it easy, and I will return soon. I'll be slinging paint on these bad boys, and I have a music article in the works as well. I was at work not too long ago, and he rolled in and told me to check out this old board he had. I was floored. It's a pretty cherry Vision Gator, with Venture trucks and Toxic wheels. Straight out of the '80's, and it even has some great period stickers. I would very much like to thank my buddy, Mikey, for finally snagging these photos.<br />
<br />
I'd like to give a little history about Gator himself, but I figure if you skate, you probably know. He's an asshole. If you don't know what I'm talking about, read his <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Rogowski">Wikipedia</a> article. To sum it up, he's a rapist, a murderer, and he converted to Christianity in prison. Seriously, screw that guy. It's still a treat to run into such a nice example of one of his signature boards.<br />
<br />
Vert is Dead did a little article about the Toxic Team if you are interested. You can scope it <a href="http://vertisdead.blogspot.com/2012/01/toxic-team-1989.html">here.</a> I believe they were based in Ocean City, Maryland, which is probably the closest beach to the area where I reside. It kinda makes sense how they showed up on this board. Seriously, look at those guys. Sick. The Toxic sticker on the tail is a nice touch as well.<br />
<br />
Thanks again to Mikey for motivating. I'll have some more paint action up for you guys soon, I'm also slowly working on restoring a Hoffman Dirty One-30 BMX frame, and I have some records to rant about. Keep checking back for more shred!<br />

<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
So I've been trying to cut down the
lead hoard a little bit these days. Blasphemy, I know. Remember, a
miniature painter only dies when his last figure is painted. I. Will.
Live. Forever. That being said, I've got a stupid stash of rad stuff,
and I want to see it go to good use. My last post was pictures of
some old school 40k stuff I did years ago, I got some good feedback,
and it really got me to thinking.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
I'd like to present a challenge. Maybe it's not really a challenge, it's more of just an offer. I have
a major boner for old Rogue Trader stuff done in a modern style, and
I have a large collection of classic Ork and Space Marine miniatures.
I'll toss serious cats a mini from my collection if you paint it up
and send me pictures. Postage is on me. I just want to see you sling
some wicked paint. I would prefer to see some reference pictures of
your stuff (i.e. I'd like evidence to prove you're not gonna be
flipping this shit on the EvilBay), but all skill levels are welcome.
I want to trust you guys, but sorry, I don't wanna see my collection
weased for someone else's gain. I could sell this shit myself. Don't
do it. I will track you down. I will hurt you. That is a promise.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgriG9X-BvwE0qBfs2A6IaH42p6V0FRWt5e32QAr8wsT_wqMQX1TdtzWd6dK8jBitDNAsgylZ4BnXMCxFznqmfJcJekWRhmQqJTmDKWDUsZAdxztxfDURV2dpr_ygvUDE42jdxnD8v4Heus/s1600/box.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgriG9X-BvwE0qBfs2A6IaH42p6V0FRWt5e32QAr8wsT_wqMQX1TdtzWd6dK8jBitDNAsgylZ4BnXMCxFznqmfJcJekWRhmQqJTmDKWDUsZAdxztxfDURV2dpr_ygvUDE42jdxnD8v4Heus/s1600/box.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Seriously, that's a drop in the bucket of my hoard. That's predominantly RT Orks and Marines.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
So on an old school kick, I decided I
should share some of the weirder and rarer stuff in my collection,
and I snagged a few more pictures of some way old stuff I painted. I
know there is more stuff kicking around here and there, but this is
all I was motivated to find while drinking cheap beer at 3 a.m.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjE_nYylPQC6pTE3yj3MbHpeUgAzLHZTDfR5yKuLqFHspi8CN1v-hYDy4QVHM8i8GDEg76wq1_TNVxPHL_QmkhOcjLFX68IG9HpInnWBj4BJJ2kviSsfuNzBjlv3RgjiQ_gF97jjsF3Nrnj/s1600/rt-boa-roc.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjE_nYylPQC6pTE3yj3MbHpeUgAzLHZTDfR5yKuLqFHspi8CN1v-hYDy4QVHM8i8GDEg76wq1_TNVxPHL_QmkhOcjLFX68IG9HpInnWBj4BJJ2kviSsfuNzBjlv3RgjiQ_gF97jjsF3Nrnj/s1600/rt-boa-roc.jpg" height="141" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
I still remember finding my copy of
Rogue Trader when I was 18 years old, getting blazed outta my gourd,
and flipping through that holy tome. So much killer art, so much
weird. The Book of the Astronomican has some wicked artwork, and a
huge catalog of painted RT goodness at the end. Somehow there are two
copies of the book crammed between that cover. Weird. I still need to
get a few pages framed to hang around the pad.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Bolt Thrower's Realm of Chaos on vinyl?
Better believe I have that shit framed. Yeah. I know you want it.
Ain't leavin' my collection. Absolutely amazing artwork. Gatefold. You need to see it all. I'll do up a whole article about it eventually. I still
remember the first time I found a Bolt Thrower album. Again, I think
I was 18, and it was Honor Valor Pride. I saw the 40k inspired album
cover and I was hooked. Can I just say how awesome early Earache
Records was? Like when Carcass appeared on Red Dwarf? Worlds collide.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">

<br />
Ratspike and an early Fantasy
Miniatures book. Blanche and Miller. So stoked to find those both. I
found them at a convention a few years ago, and I scored both for
cheap. I assume if you are reading this you know of the genius that
is Blanche, but if not, he's one of the primary creative forces
behind the evolution of the dark and moody feeling of the Warhammer
worlds. He's kind of a big deal.<br />

I will say my tastes have changed over
the years, and I don't really have the urge to paint up any more
Space Marines. I've done too many. Sorry, dudes. That being said,
I've always been a fan of Space Wolves. Vikings in space? Bring it. I
had almost a full squad of these guys painted at one point, but as I
said in my last post, some disappeared over time. I particularly love
devil lock plasma gunner. His shoulder pad declares his name is Sven,
but I really should have named him Glenn. I wasn't so clever in my
youth.</div>

I've painted two versions of the
Imperial Fist dude. One was originally in the Wolves squad, and he
departed into the void. I kept the Fist because painting yellow
sucks. Especially clean and precise black lined yellow. I don't know
how I had the patience to do that shit back in the day.</div>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
So here is a little rant for you.
One of the beautiful things about early 40k is the shameless
ripping off of all that was good in sci-fi and fantasy at the time.
Like Star Wars mixed with Tolkien with a little flavor of B-movies
and punk rock, and some history in there as well. It's really unfortunate Games Workshop has come down
to what it is these days. Bitch, bitch, bitch. We all know they are
now an evil empire, but they still occasionally put out a good kit. I
still need to snag the new Knight Titan. That being said, why GW, why?
You've abandoned pewter. It hurts my soul. I know GW being huge
dickholes is a big point of consternation in the miniatures community
these days, so I'm gonna let it go at that. Trust me, I could go on.</div>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Getting back on track, anyone who
legitimately want to wreck some old school style will have a classic
40k mini shipped to them. You can suggest what you want, but I'll pick it. Obviously there's gotta be a limit, so if
this gets too popular I'll have to bail on some people. Heh, that is
assuming people actually read this blog. Post in the comments section
if you're interested, and if possible, leave a link with some of your
work. I'll email you for details. You can also try using that nifty little contact box I added on the right hand side of the page. I'd like to see them done in a month or so.
Shoot me some pictures back. Lets bring it. Drink beers. Break out the
Bolt Thrower. Let us show how old school minis can still hang.</div>

I had my account running since 2003, and there were many pictures of miniatures that are now lost into the void. A couple moves across the country, and some of my prime pieces have disappeared. It's cool. They all went to good friends and people that deserved them. I decided to snap some shots of my favorite minis that are still kickin' around.<br />
<br />
I painted this cat around 2007 or '08. Thaddeus, the Angels of Redemption Captain. I went through a big heraldry phase for a while, and I've always been a fan of classic '80s and early '90's Space Marines. I won a gold medal with him at some show or another. It was given to one of my best buddies, and fortunately I still have access to take pics of him.<br />

This guy is one of my favorites. It isn't technically impressive, but damn, is he a badass. This must have been '05 or '06. I did a series of minis based off of Fallout/post-apocalyptic fiction and movies. I think he was from Foundry.<br />

Once more some classic Space Marine heraldry. This guy also won me a medal, silver I believe. So smooth. I don't know how I did that shit. Well, I do, but I doubt I could swing it again. '06 or '07.<br />

That's it for today, just wanted to show some stuff off. I'm hoping to have another post this week about a new 7" I picked up recently. Later.</div>

It's right down the road from me, just outside of Philly in Valley Forge, and the caliber of work there is nothing short of amazing. The fantasy/sci-fi genre has been gaining in popularity there over the past few years as well. I just went down for the day on Friday. I didn't feel like paying for the hotel room, and I decided to bail on showing. I'm just a precious, delicate flower and I can't accept rejection. Ha, not really. I'm just a lazy bastard and I still haven't finished anything that fills me with stoke. I'll get around to it someday. I just wanna wait 'til I can bring some solid A game.<br />
<br />
I did snag you guys a ton of rad shots of the immensely impressive work at this year's show. I apologize that I do not know who any of the artists are, so if you see your work and want a shoutout, get at me. I'm particularly interested in finding out who painted the Rackham miniatures.<br />
<br />
Enjoy the miniature porn, and I'll get back at you in a bit. On the skate front, not long ago my buddy showed up to work with a vintage Gator in awesome condition. When he finally shoots me some pictures I'll show that off. I'm jealous.<br />
